　　1877年,德国地理学家李希霍芬提出“丝绸之路”的命名,这一命名最初指“从公元前114年到公元127年,中国于河间地区以及中国与印度之间,以丝绸贸易为媒介的西域交通路线”.所谓西域,泛指古玉门关以西至地中海的广大地区.后来史学家把沟通中西方的商路统称“丝绸之路”.李希霍芬为何以公元前114年为丝绸之路元年？因为据中国史书记载,这一年汉武帝派张骞第二次出使西域,由此有了汉字叙事中的中西交通记录.我们近年来倡导改造人类学的原有概念,将有文字以来的传统视为“小传统”,将先于和外于文字记录的传统视为大传统.“丝绸之路”的命名以文字记载为据,缺乏大传统之关照,忽略了夏商周以来中原国家与西域之间的玉石贸易通道,无法洞察所谓“丝绸之路”的前身其实是玉石之路.

　　“丝绸之路”说,不过将西方人古老的常识变为一个专业术语.翻阅中世纪阿拉伯商人的东方旅行记,不难看出人们对丝绸之国的乌托邦式想象,很早就在西亚—欧洲地区流行.

　　与西方人自古艳羡中国丝绸不同,中国人自古艳羡西域的新疆和田美玉.阿拉伯人和欧洲人眼中的丝绸之路,实则中国人眼中的美玉之路.不然,西去路上为何没有“丝门”或“帛门”,却有“玉门”这样的关口？西学东渐以来,伴随着西方文明的殖民化进程,我们接受了太多的外来视角、外来理论和外来观念.“丝绸之路说”淹没了玉石之路的真相,就这样日渐流行起来.

　　从《春秋》《国语》《论语》《孟子》《墨子》《管子》等先秦典籍看,美玉一方面同“礼”的传统联系在一起,成为天人沟通和神人沟通的物质符号；另一方面也是至高权力和财富的象征,是化解族群与地方冲突的神圣中介物,所谓“化干戈为玉帛”.美玉如此重要,中原国家却不出产优等玉料,必须经过跨境贸易和远距离运输,从新疆和阗进口大量优质玉材.

　　按《管子·揆度》的说法:“玉起于禺氏之边山,此度去周七千八百里,其途远,其至阨.故先王度用其重而因之,珠玉为上币,黄金为中币,刀布为下币.”管子说的七八千华里相当于四千公里,与中原至和阗昆仑山的距离大体相符.上古玉石之路大体有三条:北路沿着黄河流向,先向北,绕道河套地区后再向南和东；中路随泾河走向出陇东地区,至陕西关中再东进；南路沿着今天陇海线方向,出天水至宝鸡,再向东出关中.目前这三个地区都发现了距今三四千年的齐家玉器或商代玉器,其中有明显以和阗玉料制作的产品.商周以下的高等级墓葬出土玉器多为和阗玉制品,如殷墟1001大墓、妇好墓,三门峡虢国墓,山西曲沃晋侯墓等.又据《管子》和《意林》的说法:“取玉甚难.越三江五湖,至昆仑之山,千人往,百人反,百人往,十人至.”远古时期的玉石之路九死一生,令人闻而生畏,如果没有中原国家核心价值观之巨大驱动力,西玉东输无法想象,华夏与西域之间的交通贸易也无法想象.

　　在本土文化重获文化自觉意识的今日,无疑需要对曾经熟知的一些外来文化价值进行重估.我们或许应该修正外来的“丝绸之路”说,代之以“玉石之路”或“玉石—丝绸之路”.
